Here’s an activity I put together to give learners a model for talking about their companies. The video used is from the How to … channel on YouTube called Expert Village. The speaker explains how an interviewer should introduce the company in order to make it ‘enticing’ for the interviewee.
Some of the language used is pre-taught using Quizlet and questions are embedded (using EDpuzzle) in the video primarily as a means of drawing attention to the language being used. Although the video is not particularly professional, it was chosen because
- the speaker is more or less the same age as the students
- she’s American, which makes a good contrast with my British accent
- some of the language used is quite useful and
- it’s quite short.
The advice provided can be discussed and can be used as a stimulus for the students to think about their own companies and produce similar introductions of their own.
I thought I’d share it as an example of using simple online tools to help students prepare for a role-play. Everything can be embedded in a web page (e.g. a wiki page or blog post) and shows that there’s no need to create a full-blown LMS using a content management system such as Moodle to provide reasonably engaging online activities. Anyway, see what you think.
