There are many words in German and English that look and sound similar. These can often be a big help when the meaning is also the same (e.g. ‘house’ and ‘Haus’). However, not all words that look and sound similar have the same meaning (e.g. ‘bad’ in English has a very different meaning to the German ‘Bad’). These are called ‘false friends’ and can cause misunderstandings if we’re not aware of the differences in meaning.
