Self-study guide

Academic writing
  1. Use your coursebook – Career Express (B2) 2nd Edition – to read the Writing clearly and concisely text on page 70. Make a note of the advice given.
  1. Go to the Features of academic writing page and do the ‘Concision‘ quiz.
  1. Go to the explanatory notes that follow the quiz to read about more ways of ensuring your writing is concise.

Vocabulary

To help you acquire new business and general vocabulary, do the following:

  1. Use the word list at the back of your coursebook Career Express (B2) 2nd Edition (page 134). This will be helpful in our lessons, but can also be used to learn the vocabulary in the coursebook.
  1. Make (or complete) a list of new vocabulary from Unit 10.
  1. Use your preferred method for learning the new vocabulary (e.g. the Quizlet app, a vocabulary notebook or cards).

Listening

Use your coursebook – Career Express (B2) 2nd Edition – to do the following:

Go to page 95, Section 4 Globalization: Friend or foe? and do the following:

  • In activity A, before listening, put the events in the order in which they happened.
  • Listen to the recording and check your answers.
  • Check your answers on page 129.
  • In activity B, match the causes mentioned with their effects.
  • Check your answers on page 129.

Reading
  1. Go to page 99, Section 9 International meetings, and do the following:
    • In activity B, match what the people say with what they may mean.
    • Check your answers on page 130.
    • In activity C, read about high-context and low-context communication and decide whether the meanings in the speech bubbles are typical of someone from a high-context or a low-context culture.
    • See the Answer key below to check your answers.
  1. Go to page 100, Case study: Skype – the big little company. and do the following:
    • In activity A, answer the three questions.
    • In activity B, read the article and check if your answers were correct.
    • See the Answer key below to check your answers.

Grammar

  1. Read the text and choose the correct options to express ability, possibility, obligation or advice.

Section 11 Case study: Skype – the big little company

Activity B

  1. Skype software was originally developed in Estonia.
  2. Acquisition by eBay in 2005 / sold to a consortium of investors in 2009 / acquisition by Microsoft in 2011.
  3. The company has grown and its products are now more widely available. But Microsoft has closed several Skype offices recently (at the time this article was written) in order to cut costs and help the company develop in a more focused way.
